Transcriptomics is the high-throughput study of cellular gene expression under specific conditions by cataloging the complete set of RNA transcripts. Transcriptomics enables a genome-wide analysis of transcription at single nucleotide resolution, including determination of the relative abundance of transcripts, unbiased identification of alternative splicing events and post-transcriptional RNA editing events, and detection of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).\n-Biomonitoring models and methods for an early warning of environmental stress conditions:\nMonitoring strategies through biomarkers and biondicator organisms for the evaluation of environmental conditions using classical and innovative methods (expression pattern of stress-related genes, methylation pattern).             "LaboratoryResearchScope": "The Laboratory of Plant Biology is active in the Department of Biology, Ecology and Earth Sciences (DiBEST), at the University of Calabria. The laboratory is addressed to several private and public bodies (such as national, regional public bodies, National Natural Parks, private and public companies , biotechnological enterprises,  universities, Museum  and research centres ) which operate in the field of Ecology and Conservation,  Agriculture and Food, Floriculture,  Green Biotechnology as well as of Natural Museum Activity and Scientific Divulgation. The mission is to innovate, through high-throughput technologies, the accumulation of data and information on several aspects of  plant  biology ( below described)  and to integrate such knowledge into the management of environment , biodiversity and plant resources, by supporting the formulation of predictive/management models  and the solution of decision making problems.                                           The Laboratory includes three sections established, under different denominations, about in 1980s, in the former Department of Ecology and today active in the DiBEST:                                                                                                                      1° section:  \"Plant Cytophysiology and Biotechnology \" (Scientific  Coordinator: Prof.ssa Adriana Chiappetta). The mission is to innovate, at the cytophysiological and molecular levels, the information on plant developmental biology and eco-physiology and on the related biotechnologies.                                       \n 2° section: \"Plant Biosystematic \" (Scientific Coordinator: Prof. Giuseppe Pellegrino).                                                                                                                                                                                                     The mission is to innovate the information on plant biodiversity and on the protection and preservation of historical and cultural heritage of Calabria and the Mediterranean basin.                                                                                                                                                                                  3 ° section: \"Plant Taxonomy, Conservation and Ecology \"(Scientific Coordinator: Prof.ssa Liliana Bernardo).  \nThe research, the vocational training and continuous learning carried out in the Laboratory of Plant Cytophysiology is focused on the cytophysiological and molecular bases underlying plant developmental biology and plant adaptability/resilience to changing environment. Such activities deal with both Basic and Applied Research as well as with Biotechnology, Technology Transfer and Advanced Technical Consulting. In more details, in addition to the study of  model systems, most of the research is carried out : i)   on relevant agronomic plants (peach, olive, citrus) in relation to plant productiveness and plant product quality; ii) on terrestrial and aquatic  plants of great ecological significance ( such as marine phanerogames, psammophyte plants and algae) in relation to the monitoring and management of biodiversity and ecosystems through: the identification of novel biomarkers to be used  for an early warning of environmental alterations and threats;  analysis of plant resilience to global change; recovery against land desertification;  environment re-naturalization; green biotechnologies (  phytoremediation and use of plant biomass  for the  production of biofuel   and products of interest). Integrated and high-throughput approaches are applied and, from evaluating the objectives, electing alternatives, monitoring results up to the assessment of the expected impact, the Laboratory will provide information useful to develop decision support systems  in the field of  Ecology and Environment,  Agriculture and Food, Green Biotechnology.\nThe research, the vocational training and continuous learning carried out in the Laboratory of \"Plant Biosystematics\" is focused on the molecular variability of spontaneous species or of agricultural interest in order to evaluate their genetic structure and interspecific relationships, to the study of the biology of reproduction with manual pollination experiments and tests of viability and germination of seeds in order to evaluate the reproductive success, the existence of reproductive barriers between the entities under examination and the exposure to the risk of extinction, the identification of biodeteriogenic organisms on different materials ( wood, rock, parchment, etc.) of interest for cultural heritage. The approaches used are highly innovative and high throghouput and the knowledge gained supports application activities in the Ecological-Environmental, Agri-food and Cultural Heritage sectors. \nThe research, the vocational training and continuous learning carried out in the Laboratory \"Taxonomy, Conservation and Plant Ecology\" \" is focused on the  plant conservation biology, floristics and vegetation sciences, thus including surveys involving both the population and plant community levels. In the first case, the main objective is the study of the relationship between the reproductive system and exposure to the risk of extinction in rare plants and / or plants subject to sensitive rates of contraction and fragmentation. At the plant community level, studies conducted both at a point and regional scale, aim at the identification of ecological parameters capable of significantly influencing the aggregation models between plant species, and at the analysis of the evolution models of the vegetation cover in characterized environmental contexts. from different regimes of presence and anthropogenic pressure.\nFloristic research, carried out especially in lesser known areas, is further increasing the herbarium of the Calabrian flora. The determination and computerization of herbarium samples, together with the archiving of all bibliographic data, made it possible to structure a database aimed at creating a Flora Calabra, which, once completed, can be consulted online.
